This is the homepage for that section of the Setis site dealing with John Tranter’s early writing, 1960-1970, hosted by the University of Sydney Library, Sydney, Australia. It is copyright. Two other sites offer over a thousand pages of more recent material: the John Tranter page on APRIL (the Australian Poetry Resources Internet Library), and John’s homepage at johntranter.com. On this site:

link Parallax and other poems: John Tranter’s first book of poems, published in 1970, when he was 27. This edition consists of HTML text of each page, and linked photographic images of the pages of the original printed book and images of the front and back cover, and RealAudio recordings of the author reading sixteen of the poems.

The book is also available here link for viewing or downloading in the form of an Adobe Acrobat Portable Document File. To read the file you will need the free Adobe Acrobat PDF Reader, which you may download from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

link Free Grass: an electronic edition of the only extant number of Free Grass magazine, made up of HTML text and linked photographic images of the original printed pages. Free Grass, a five page mimeographed magazine, splashed into the pond of little ‘underground’ magazines in Australia in 1968. The editorial standards were loose, and there was a strong counter-cultural flavour to the thing. Strangest of all, it lived up to its title: it was literally free. But Free Grass had a secret…

link Eighteen Reviews from the 1970s of Parallax and Crying in Early Infancy: 100 Sonnets (1977).

link Documents: a page of links to the contents page of Transit New Poetry numbers One and Two, the contents page of the 1970 poetry anthology Preface to the Seventies, and a column hostile to the new poetry by Cyril Pearl with replies from Rudi Krausmann and John Tranter; also John’s 1966 passport and some pages of Lyn Tranter’s 1966 passport.

Much of the more recent material originally shown on this site has been moved to the John Tranter page on APRIL (the Australian Poetry Resources Internet Library), and John’s homepage at johntranter.com. Both these sites are free to view.
